LAWPC CLAIMS THIRD PREMIER LEAGUE TITLE
LOS ALAMITOS, CA - Los Angeles Water Polo Club (LAWPC) pulled out a narrow victory over local rival Long Beach Shore, who came back from a four-goal deficient to tie the game in the fourth quarter. Olympian, and 2007 Best Offensive Player Brett Ormsby stepped up in the final seconds of the game to deliver the winning goal for LAWPC, ending the game with a one goal lead over Long Beach Shore.
"This tournament means a lot to our men's program," commented Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo. "All the final round matches were well-played games. Today was a great opportunity to scout our current National Team athletes and future talent."
From the cadet, youth, junior and senior levels, all National Teams will be impacted by this tournament. In the coming week the men's National Team coaching staff will meet to evaluate the performances of the athletes who competed in the Premier League.
"We spent a lot of time evaluating our current Senior National Team athletes' fitness levels and decision making skills. The National Team coaches will meet this Wednesday to provide feedback to the athletes and determine preliminary rosters for the FINA World League and Pan American Games being held this summer."
In addition to evaluating Senior National Team athletes, Coach Azevedo spent a significant amount of time with his other age group coaches to scout future talent.
"Premier League was especially significant for our Junior National Team athletes who are competing for spots on the 2007 Junior World Championship roster," Azevedo said. "Unless a junior team member was injured, he was required to participate in the tournament in order to be evaluated by our coaching staff. Based on their performances during Premier League and their upcoming training camp at the end of this month, we will determine our final roster of 15 to submit for Junior Worlds."

FLASH QUOTE
LAWPC - Brandon Brooks, goalkeeper: "We came out strong today. LB Shore had a tough start, but they stayed aggressive the entire game. While we relaxed a bit, LB Shore never gave up. In the end, it came down to our ability to play as a team. We all like playing with each other, and in tough situations we are able to dig deep and help each other." |
