Re: The LAWPC Annual Fund

Dear Los Angeles Water Polo Club Family:

2007 was another exciting year for the LAWPC!  Our Premier League Squad captured their 2nd consecutive and 3rd overall Premier League Division I Championship in last spring with a narrow 12-11 victory over rival Long Beach Shore.   LAWPC Coach Brett Ormsby scored the game winner with just 44 seconds left on the clock and was named the Best Offensive Player of the Championship. The club is looking towards a threepeat this year with another strong contingent of athletes, including 6 National Team Members and some of our top 18U players, battling the best in the country.

This summer saw LAWPC place 4 teams in the top 6 of their respective age groups at the 2006 Junior Olympics Championship.  The Club sent 10 teams and over 132 athletes to the event in the Bay Area. We are looking forward to another strong showing this summer in Orange County as the Club hopes to add to its 6 National Championships.

Over 150 young men recently tried out for the Coastal California Zone Olympic Development Camp with an impressive group of 7 LAWPC athletes being named to the  Junior (1991 &1992) Training Team and 6 others tabbed for the Youth (1993 & Younger) Division.  In all, the Club accounted for more than 20% of the athletes selected for the Olympic Development Program this year.  We have high hopes for an equally impressive showing on the womenÕs side as they take to the water in March.  LAWPC saw 9 of its athletes from similar Zone Teams advance to the USA National Cadet and Youth Rosters in 2007, and we are of to a good start for another strong showing at the National level this year.

The strength of Los Angeles Water Polo Club is also demonstrated by the number of club athletes who are playing collegiate water polo this year.  There are 56 men and women that once wore the LAWPC cap on NCAA rosters across the country. Check out ÒLAWPC Goes off to CollegeÓ on the web site.

The LA Water Polo Club continues to strive to provide the best coaching for all levels of its members and is pleased to have Olympian and current National Team member Brandon Brooks and former National Team member Matt Flesher continue their skills clinics for us.  And we are once again pleased to have Richard Corso, former head coach for the USA MenÕs Olympic Team and currently the head coach for the University of California WomenÕs Team, continuing his association with LAWPC with his invaluable clinics.

These are just a few highlights from this last year, and we should all take a great deal of pride in the continued growth and success of our Club.  These accomplishments are a result of the hard work of the players and coaches and the loyal support of Los Angeles Water Polo Club families.

LAWPC has identified five areas of focus to continue to build on in 2008:

  • Playbooks – provide all players with LAWPC playbooks and lessons.
  • Skills Clinics – expand the skills clinic program.
  • Player Evaluations – provide all players with an evaluation from their coaches at the end of each session.
  • Premier Competition – continue to provide funding for Premier League or similar teams.
  • Scholarships - provide funds to allow players of all economic backgrounds to participate in LAWPC.

Recognizing that providing some of these opportunities requires funding beyond the normal membership fees LAWPC has established the Los Angeles Water Polo Club Annual Fund and has raised more than $25,000 annually through the generosity of the LAWPC families.  In an effort to continue to improve the LAWPC and provide the finest opportunities for our members the Board has decided to continue this fundraising effort for the 2008 year.

I am pleased to announce that each member of the Board of Directors has already pledged to contribute to the fund and that each member of the Coaching Staff has agreed to contribute in kind with private lessons for LAWPC families contributing at Olympic Ring, Gold and Silver levels.  I believe that this participation reflects the belief of these groups in the importance of the Annual Fund to meeting our goals.

It is my sincere hope that we will also have 100% participation in this program from our LAWPC families, and of course all donations are tax deductible.  On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to encourage you to be as generous as you can since all of the funds are being used to support the club that is playing an important role in the development of your children.

Thank you for your continued support of the Los Angeles Water Polo Club!

Sincerely,

The LAWPC Board of Directors

Manny Gonzalez – President
